The CSUF American Studies masters degree consists of 30 units which is generally 10 courses. Slightly more may be required of a student whose undergraduate major was in an unrelated field.
Core Courses (6 Units)

- AMST 502 (3 Units)
Electives (12 Units)
- AMST 400/500-level electives
Related Fields (6 Units)
- 500-level graduate seminars in related fields (6 Units)
Skill Elective (3 Units)
- AMST 595 (Internship), AMST 596 (teaching tutorial), or a practical skill course taken at the 400 or 500 level (with approval of graduate advisor)
Exit Option (3 Units)
- AMST 598 (Thesis) or AMST 599 (Exam)
