Study Plan

The CSUF American Studies masters degree consists of 30 units which is generally 10 courses. Slightly more may be required of a student whose undergraduate major was in an unrelated field.

Core Courses (6 Units)

  • AMST 501 (3 Units)
  • AMST 502 (3 Units)

Electives (12 Units)

  • AMST 400/500-level electives

Related Fields (6 Units)

  • 500-level graduate seminars in related fields (6 Units)

Skill Elective (3 Units)

  • AMST 595 (Internship), AMST 596 (teaching tutorial), or a practical skill course taken at the 400 or 500 level (with approval of graduate advisor)

Exit Option (3 Units)

  • AMST 598 (Thesis) or AMST 599 (Exam)
Sample Roadmap: 2 Years

Because the program is built on flexibility, our students follow numerous different plans depending on their schedules and course offerings. The only specific semester requirement is that you take AMST 501 during your first semester. However, this is a sample roadmap to complete the degree in two years. For your specific roadmap, please consult Dr. Abnet.
